What's going on?
Wild orangutans reside solely in Indonesia, and every hour 300 football-fields-worth of their rainforest habitat is demolished to make way for palm oil plantations.
This agricultural “commodity” is used in 50% of all consumer goods -- from lipstick to shampoo, packaged food to biofuel. U.S. demand alone has tripled over the past 5 years, driving orangutan populations to an all time low. Without consumer awareness and a push to extract this resource sustainably, the critically endangered orangutan will be extinct within our lifetime.
How can I help?
We hold so much power as consumers -- let’s make informed decisions and use it for good!
- Check the ingredients. Palm oil can go by a variety of names including Palmitate, Hexadecylic or Cetearyl Alcohol.
- Choose products that use sustainably produced palm oil (they’ll have an RSPO or Green Palm label on the packaging).
- Download the Sustainable Palm Oil app to scan barcodes on the go iPhone // Android
- Spread awareness!
